NE Portland is Frogville

These are the frogs that live in my backyard. A few years ago, we traveled to "Hughes Water Gardens" for their tadpole giveaway. They give away a free bag of tadpoles that you can take home and put in your waterbowls. We put them in about three years ago and we have frogs every Spring and Summer. The frogs seem to multiply every year and this year we saw small clusters of eggs. These eggs just turned into teeny tadpoles in the last few days. So I guess we will have LOTS of frogs in the future. We are hoping that maybe some of the frogs will travel to neighboring yards. But you must have a (non-splashy) water feature to attract the frogs. Your landscape needs to be partially shaded and have lots of hiding spots. Common enemies of frogs are cats, raccoons, and birds. They also need water bowls with no fish living there.
Aren't they cute!

Numbers...?

I went to a church rummage sale this morning. I'd been out there last year but I had forgotten they did "numbers" at the door. Hmmm......for a church rummage sale? I parked and headed toward the door. I noticed that there were ALOT of older folks. In fact, I felt like I was attending a Lawrence Welk concert. I was the youngest by about 30 years!
I was number 38.....ok, not too bad. But this is a church rummage sale...?
It was time to open the doors. The lady at the front door said "OK...the first twenty".
There was a rush to the door (and I know some of those old farts were not #1-20) but she NEVER CHECKED THEIR NUMBERS!!! What's the frikken point? All that hoohaa about numbers and then you don't police it...?
Anyway, she finally started collecting the numbers as people were going in order. I got in about 5 minutes later. This sale has been better previous years. I still managed to find a bunch of stuff and a few really cute things. Other shoppers didn't have that great of stuff in their baskets either. This sale is staffed by volunteers. So you get all the problems that go with that......chit-chat in the aisles, clueless calculator operation, and general chaos. But overall it was worth the time. Here's a few pics of some new stuff that came from this sale and items I've recently found.
Sorry for the kvetching.....my allergies have been killing me and I'm cranky!

Sew Fabulous!

Wow!.......that's what I said when I found this sewing basket from the 1940's filled with retro notions and sewing supplies. Included were vintage pincushions, spools and thread, assorted pins, and a fantastic 40's rotating pincushion/threadholder in wonderful condition.
You can use these notions when you sew your costume for the Ballroom Dancing competition (below).

These are the nicest suitcases I've found in a very long time. Circa 1950, these beauties are leather and have fabulous interiors and compartments. Awesome!

I found some great kid's books recently. The "make-it book" is filled with (Dick and Jane style) retro illustrations. This book is hardbound and is dated 1953.
And.....who can resist a coupla cheesy tourist plates?

Sexy new stuff

Cool items are finding their way to the Rita Deco Shop. Recent arrivals include a small set of Vernon Kilns dishware. Great 40's era satin pillow from 'Camp Campbell - Kentucky'. A wonderfully whimsical birdhouse which resembles the "Keebler Elves" house.

Awesome mid-sixties picnic set. Basket and complete melmac set-up for 4. I have these original 50's era (unused) potato chip bags......these would be great framed and displayed in a kitchen.

You know it's springtime...

You know it's springtime when you see a toilet filled with spring blossoms. Spotted April 20th, 8:45 a.m. - NE. 44th Avenue. Portland is so frikken weird....!

Six more weeks...and counting!

Here's where I'll be six weeks from now. We are taking a Spring trip to Chicago. I will be checking out the vintage scene in the Windy City. We have shopping trips planned in quaint Chicago suburbs and neighborhoods. Also touring historic homes and buildings including Frank Lloyd Wright's home/studio and the Robie House. This is a good time to travel if you can swing it. We found many good deals....airfare, lodging, and discounts on attractions. We will have two cameras and take LOTS of pics for the blog....plus tales of the exciting travel adventures! I can't wait.....

Hooray for Hollywood....(Calif.)

In recent days there have been a couple of art directors/set crew people through the shop. They have been buying up various items for a house/office setting that will be used in a major motion picture being filmed here in Portland. With the local economy on shaky ground, I welcome these Hollywood folks and their shopping budgets! They have been wonderful to talk with and seem to enjoy the Portland location. I say "YES" to any film projects coming to our city and state. Hopefully our elected officials can entice MORE films to be shot here. It's too bad we lost the "Twilight" sequels to Canada......that was one big flub for Governor Ted and his friends.
Geez........

New Spring Arrivals.....

New items are arriving at the shop! Vintage Fiesta and Homer Laughlin dishes. Shabby linens and kitchenware. 1950's "Wizard of Oz" book with wonderful illustration plates. Formica table and a funky 60's kitchen stool. All items are out on the floor and ready to sell.

You're so dramatic...!

Perfect for the "pain in the ass" people we meet everyday. These signs are available at the Rita Deco Shop. Wonderful gift for someone who's just a bit "over the top" or "high maintenance".
Lots of Moms have bought these for their teenage daughters....

That was in my Grandma's house...!

We always have people in the shop who comment: "That's just like the one in my Grandma's house" or "My Mom had that.....I grew up with it". So this is what makes vintage and retro collecting such a joy. It's almost more about the nostalgia than the actual collectible. Often, the Rita Deco Shop replaces an item that has been missing from someone's life for decades. People want to find stuff they grew up with or find an item to replace something that was tossed out years ago.

Dishes, kitchen collectibles, utensils, and wall decor are common items people want to duplicate from their childhoods. Many customers lament that these common, everyday items were given away or tossed out. A lucky few collectors have original items passed down through the years. We mostly see folks who are "trying to find it again". We take customer's "want lists" and contact them when we do find their cherished collectible (or something pretty darn close!).

Paris Hilton & Posh Spice: We love RITA DECO!

After these impressive endorsements by Paris Hilton and Victoria "posh spice" Beckham, the Rita Deco Shop began it's media blitz. The entire city was buzzing with "everything Rita" as the trademark image appeared on bus mall posters, TV ads, and company billboards. Deemed as the "it" place to shop.....the small store became a popular hangout for paparazzi hoping to catch a glimpse of several A-list celebrities.

These girls loved the shop SO MUCH they couldn't stop hugging and kissing one of the "Rita" billboards...!

When you go....leave a paper trail

I love old paper. I'm always digging for interesting items for my personal collections. I find lots of great stuff that I can't use.....so it ends up at the shop. Call it "ephemera" or "paper finds"....it's all quite unique and somewhat rare. Most of these things were thrown out. Only a few survive to become treasured memorabilia.

At the Rita Deco Shop, you will find old advertising, photos, restaurant menus, travel and postcards. I price very reasonable....so you will want to take home a bag full!
